2018 is rushing by at an alarming rate and we have already run a very successful season of To Be Honest, launched Stories of Strength at Parliament house and have two new songs in the pipeline for our RESPECT project. It will be a relentless and fruitful year and we look forward to having you with us as participants, as audience and supporters. Unlike so many organisations that make the claim, BYDS is a trusted and vital part of this community and works in and with it at every step. As Tania Mihailuk stated in parliament last week, “I acknowledge BYDS and thank it for its amazing work over more than 25 years supporting our young people.”

Bankstown Poetry Slam celebrates its 5th Birthday!!
Now in its 5th year, the Bankstown Poetry Slam is back next Tuesday for a year of slamming, finger clicking, watermelon flowing poetry fun at the Bankstown Arts Centre!
BYDS is so proud to see how the Bankstown Poetry Slam has grown since 2013. We are happy to have played a vital part in helping and supporting BPS in their quest for young Australians to voice their thoughts through spoken word. We are amazed at the diverse performers and audiences that have graced our doors and can only imagine how BPS will continue to grow in 2018 and onwards.
This month’s feature poet is Jahra Rager from Aotearoa (New Zealand) supported by BYDS’ very own Kevin Ngo. You won’t want to miss out on this birthday party. Make sure you register your interest by booking through this Eventbrite link: here

Stories of Strength Website Launch
BYDS were very proud to launch the new Stories of Strength website at Parliament house. A big thank you to so many of our friends, associates and colleagues who turned out for this event. Special thanks to our local State member, Tania Mihailuk, for hosting us.
Stories of Strength has involved seasoned professionals training cohorts of young, local high school students in interviewing skills. To date more than sixty interviews with friends, family, teachers and neighbours have been completed – all seeking to show our community’s amazing strength in the face of adversity. These stories are showcased through various platforms: on FBI radio’s All the Best, in local shopping centres and online. Our display is currently being hosted at Bankstown Library and Knowledge centre. We aim to share these inspiring stories of resilience with a bigger audience to counter hate and mistrust.
Thanks to our steering committee, congratulations to our hard working school partners, Sir Joseph Banks and Chester Hill High Schools and our multi-talented coordinator, Zainab Kadhim.
If you think you have a person we should interview please contact us:
